The FSBR forecast that the inflation rate as measured by the RPI would be down to 4½ per cent. by the second quarter of 1990.

Mr. Skinner

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer when he expects the level of inflation to come down; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Lilley

The 1989 FSBR forecasts that inflation will be 5½ per cent. in the fourth quarter of 1989.

52. Mr. McAllion

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer, what is his target rate of inflation for April 1990; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Lilley

The Government do not set specific short-term targets for the rate of inflation. Tight monetary policy will ensure that inflation moderates from its current level. My right Hon. Friend forecast in his Budget statement that the RPI inflation rate would be 5½ per cent. in the fourth quarter of 1989, and 4½ per cent. in the second quarter of 1990.

42. Mr. Andrew Smith

Mr. Lilley

Only Ireland treats owner-occupier housing costs in its measure of consumer price inflation in a similar way to the United Kingdom. The overall inflation rate in Ireland is currently below that in the United Kingdom.

31. Mr. Morley

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what is the current rate of inflation.

112. Mr. Geoffrey Robinson
