To ask the Secretary of State for Health if he will give for each district health authority in England in 1987(a) the total number of beds in non-psychiatric National Health Service hospitals, (b) the total number of beds in private hospitals, nursing homes and clinics registered under section 23 of the Registered Nursing

The information requested is given in the table. As the distribution of private nursing homes is not controlled by the needs of the resident community to the same extent as NHS provison of services, comparisons of bed stock may be misleading, particularly at district health authority level.
