To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food if he will list all the research being sponsored by his Department into bovine spongiform encephalopathy and other transmissable encephalopathies.

My Department currently funds research on BSE at its central veterinary laboratory at Weybridge which covers epidemiological studies, clinico-pathology, transmission experiments using a number of animal species, chemical pathology, genetics and semen collection.

The cost of this work in 1988–89 was £764,000.
