To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science what action he intends to take in the light of the Policy Studies Institute report "The School Effect."

Mr. Butcher

This important report includes evidence of marked variations between secondary schools in the level of achievement of pupils of similar abilities. It reinforces the Government's determination to proceed with the implementation of the national curriculum and with the arrangements for assessment and testing.
