§ Mr. FreemanCentrally collected statistics do not include total numbers of those suffering from "strokes" (acute cerebrovascular disease). However, it is believed that the total number in England and Wales is about 100,000 pa, about 1 in 500 of the population. In broad terms, one third of those who have strokes will suffer disability. After treatment for the acute condition, a range of hospital services is available to stroke victims, including rehabilitation, speech therapy, occupational therapy and physiotherapy.
