To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science what has been the change in the proportion of school leavers in the north-west going on to further or higher education in the north-west since 1979–80.

In 1979–80, 18.2 per cent. of leavers from maintained schools in the North-west intended to proceed to a course of further or higher education. The comparable figure for 1986–87 was 27.6 per cent.
