To ask the Attorney-General if he will provide for the latest available 12 month period(a) the number of junior counsel regularly practising and (b) the number of junior counsel regularly practising in the criminal courts; and if he will make a statement.

The Attorney-General

The number of junior counsel regularly practising is 5,343 for the 12-month period ending 1 October 19881; the number of junior counsel regularly practising in the criminal courts is 2,926 as at 17 March 19892. 1 Figures supplied by the Bar Council based on those registered as at 1 October. 2 Figures supplied by the Bar Mutual Indemnity Fund as at 17 March 1989.
