To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (1), pursuant to his reply to the hon. Member for South Shields (Dr. Clark) of 3 March 1989,Official Report, columns 373–74, when he intends to introduce an amendment to the Diseases of Animals Protein Processing Order 1981 requiring protein processors to take samples from each day's production and to notify his Department of the results;

(2), pursuant to his reply to the hon. Member for South Shields (Dr. Clark) of 3 March 1989, Official Report, columns 373–74, when he intends to lay an order providing for the compulsory bacteriological monitoring of all poultry laying flocks;

(3), pursuant to his reply to the hon. Member for South Shields (Dr. Clark) of 3 March 1989, Official Report, columns 373–74, when he intends to introduce measures on the registration of breeding and laying flocks and the registration and monitoring of hatcheries;

(4), pursuant to his reply to the hon. Member for South Shields (Dr. Clark) of 3 March 1989, Official Report, columns 373–74, when he intends to strengthen control measures applicable to rodents to further minimise the risk of spread of salmonella;

(5), pursuant to his reply to the hon. Member for South Shields (Dr. Clark) of 3 March 1989, Official Report, columns 373–74, when he intends to introduce statutory requirements for the hygienic handling of eggs.

On 16 March I introduced secondary legislation under the Animal Health Act 1981 requiring poultry flock owners to submit samples from their flocks for salmonella testing and to keep records of the test results.

An order will also be made as soon as possible requiring protein processors to take samples from each day's production and to notify the results to my Department.
