HL Deb 22 March 1989 vol 505 c814WA
Lord Mason of Barnsley

asked Her Majesty's Government:

By what means the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food and the Secretary of State for Scotland are gathering evidence in :heir review of salmon netting off the coasts of North-Eastern England and Eastern Scotland and what organisations have and are being approached for information.

Baroness Trumpington

Scientists from my department and the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries for Scotland have been gathering a wide variety of information from various sources. This includes current and historic catch and tagging data. The scientific research being carried out, in co-operation with the water authorities and district salmon fishery boards, includes a micro-tagging programme and river surveys. Both commercial netsmen and recreational fishermen have contributed to this work through catch and tag returns. Further data have still to be collected and analysed before the report can be produced.
