Mr. Skinner

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what the personal allowance for a married man would be now if increased in line with earnings in each year since 1979.

Mr. Norman Lamont

If personal allowances had been increased in line with the growth in male average earnings since 1978–79, the married man's allowance would be £4,525 in 1989–90.
