§ Lord Hyltonasked Her Majesty's Government:
How many managers in the National Health Service are now on performance related contracts and where are they located in Britain and Northern Ireland.
§ Lord HenleyThere are now 817, 16 and 41 general manager posts in the National Health Service in England, Scotland and Wales, respectively. There are four general manager posts in Northern Ireland. Of the total 874 posts, about 780 are held by full-time general managers, almost all of whom will have accepted new fixed-term contracts of employment which may be extended on the basis of satisfactory performance. Part-time general managers (mostly doctors) have similar fixed-term contracts relating to their general management duties, but may retain in addition their other contract relating to their clinical or other functions.
813WAIn addition, some 770 second-in-line managers in health authorities in the United Kingdom have accepted new pay and conditions of service on the basis of new contracts of employment that explicitly link continuation with satisfactory performance. Similar contracts will be offered to a wider group of managers below this level over the next few months.
