To ask the Secretary of State for Health what was the change in nurses' pay in(a) 1975–76 and (b) the latest available year.

Mr. Mellor

Nurses received an average pay increase of 8 per cent. in 1975–76, compared with 17.9 per cent. last year. After allowing for inflation nurses pay fell by 4.3 per cent. in 1975–76 compared with an increase of 12.5 per cent. last year. Nurses will get a further average increase of 6.8 per cent. from 1 April.
