To ask the Secretary of State for Health how many nurses there were(a) in 1979 and (b) in the latest year for which figures are available.

The number of nursing and midwifery staff (including agency staff) employed in the NHS in England at 30 September 1979 and 1987 were 358,400 and 404,000 whole-time equivalents respectively.
