HC Deb 20 March 1989 vol 149 c448W
Mr. David Nicholson

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will make a statement on the Government's policy in respect of negotiations on the United Nations convention on the rights of the child; whether it is intended that Her Majesty's Government should be a signatory to that convention; and what reservations Her Majesty's Government have expressed on the convention.

Mr. Eggar

The United Kingdom has played a leading role in the drafting of the United Nations convention on the rights of the child and intends to sign and ratify soon after its adoption. We indicated at the working group in December last that we may need to enter reservations on various articles of the convention but the scope of these reservations has yet to be determined.
