To ask the Secretary of State for Health what is the Government's estimate of the hospital and community health service pay and price deflator for 1988–89.

[holding answer 22 February 1989]: The deflator is expected to rise by some 10.5 per cent. in 1988–89. A large part of this increase is attributable to review body pay awards, including the 17.9 per cent. award to nurses.
