HC Deb 14 March 1989 vol 149 c205W
Mr. David Nicholson

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what estimate his Department has of the total mileage driven by the average motorist per annum; and how this estimate is arrived at.

Mr. Peter Bottomley

I am advised that the average motorist drives about 6,000 miles per annum, while the average household car travels 7,700 miles per annum. Mileage per car is higher than mileage per driver because there is more than one driver per car. These estimates are derived from the latest national travel survey carried out in 1985–86.
