To ask the Secretary of State for Employment how many unemployed people have been helped to start a business during the last 12 months through the enterprise allowance scheme; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Cope

In the year to March 1989, 99,070 unemployed people set up their own businesses with the help of the enterprise allowance scheme. Since the scheme began in 1982 over 421,000 unemployed people have been helped to create their own business.
