To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what is the total number of people who receive a tax form; and what percentage of the taxable population this represents.

[holding answer 10 March 1989]: The total number of people receiving income tax returns and claims forms is 9.5 million which represents around 37 per cent. of the taxable population for whom records are held.
