HC Deb 13 March 1989 vol 149 cc21-2W
Mr. Bermingham

To ask the Secretary of State for Energy if he will direct the Central Electricity Generating Board to continue to test systems for cleansing sulphurous emissions from large fossil-fuelled power stations; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Michael Spicer

In order to meet the requirements of the EC large combustion plant directive the Central Electricity Generating Board will wish to appraise both the technical and cost efficiency of various methods of reducing sulphur emissions. The type of process chosen for future plant as well as that retrofitted to existing power stations will be a matter for the commercial judgment of the CEGB and its successors.
