To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what studies his Department is(a) carrying out and (b) sponsoring on potential demand for fast trains for passengers and freight to the continent after 1992.

Forecasts of potential demand have been produced for BR, SNCF and Eurotunnel. BR is taking account of them in preparing the plan required by the Channel Tunnel Act, setting out its proposals for Channel tunnel rail services.
