To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what is the latest figure for the estimated spending in 1988–89 by his Department on(a) television advertising, (b) radio advertising, (c) newspaper advertising and (d) other promotional material; and what is the 1989–90 budget for each of these categories of spending.

The latest estimate for spending by the Department of Transport in 1988–89 on publicity and advertising is £5,708,000. The 1989–90 budget is £5,878,000. These figures are broken down as follows:
