Sir Dudley Smith

To ask the Secretary of State for Energy what current estimate he has of the number of households in England and Wales which are unable to obtain a gas supply.

Mr. Peter Morrison

As my hon. Friend will appreciate this is now a matter for British Gas plc, since it has been privatised.

Sir Dudley Smith

To ask the Secretary of State for Energy what current estimate he has of the number of householders in England and Wales who are unable to burn coal or wood fires.

Mr. Parkinson

A recent market survey by Audit Great Britain (AGB) estimated that the number of households in England and Wales who did not have the potential to burn coal or wood fires in the winter of 1987–89 was 12.843 million.
