Mr. Thornton

To ask the Secretary of State for Employment if he will list the total number of fatalities in the construction industry reported by the Health and Safety Executive for each year between 1960 and 1987, inclusive that were caused by(a) falls of persons, (b) falls of materials, (c) work in excavations, (d) transport, (e) electricity, (f) cranes, (g) hoists and (h) other.

Mr. Nicholls

The table shows the available information. Fatalities to the self-employed and members of the public were not reportable until 1 January 1981. The few voluntary reports collected between 1978 and 1980 are included with employees. Fatal injuries to the self-employed working on their own have never been reportable.
