HL Deb 08 March 1989 vol 504 c1592WA
Lord Jenkins of Putney asked Her Majesty's Government

How much plutonium from civil reactors has been exported to the United States for civil research or commercial use since 1963 under the provisions of the 1958–59 mutual defence agreement on atomic energy matters.

Lord Trefgarne

The only plutonium from United Kingdom civil reactors that has been exported to the US under the US-UK mutual defence agreement was sent before 1971 in exchange for enriched uranium and, as stated by the then Prime Minister, Sir Alec Douglas Home, on 21st April 1964 in the House of Commons was to he used for civil purposes. The quantity of plutonium sent is classified and cannot therefore he given.
