Lord Chelwood asked Her Majesty's GovernmentWhat co-operation there is with countries in Africa, especially Commonwealth countries, to limit and, if possible, prevent the present large-scale poaching for commercial purposes, with particular regard to rhinoceros horn and ivory.
§ The Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State, Department of the Environment (Lord Hesketh)long with many African and Commonwealth countries, to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) which controls commercial trade in rhinoceros horn and ivory. Measures to strengthen the existing controls aimed at inhibiting the poaching and illegal trade in African elephant ivory and to encourage the maintenance of ecologically viable African elephant populations are to be discussed at the next Environmental Council meeting.
In particular we have supported the Kenyan Wildlife Department over several years by the provision of three expatriate staff, one of whom coordinates the Kenya Rhino Rescue Project.
