To ask the Secretary of State for Social Security what percentage of the social security budget is spent on the elderly.

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Security if he will make a statement on his Department's spending plans on support for the elderly as outlined in "The Government's Expenditure Plans 1989–92" White Paper Cm 615.

Mr. Scott

Spending on benefits for the elderly continues to increase, and is planned to rise to nearly £28 billion in 1991–92.
