To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many people were in prison at the most recent count.

Mr. Hogg

At unlocking on Friday 24 February, 49,325 prisoners (The figures comprise returns from each regional office. Figures from the North region are only provisional.) were held in prison establishments in England and Wales. A further 196 prisoners were held in police cells.
