To ask the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster if he will estimate the level of investments in the last financial year by indigenous motor manufacturers.

Mr. Atkins

The most recent reliable estimate of investment is from the annual census of production for 1987. In that year it is estimated that net capital expenditure by the United Kingdom motor industry' amounted to £612 million.
