To ask the Secretary of State for Transport if he will discuss with the chairman of British Rail the withdrawal from auction, on 6 July, of sites on the Great Central line.

These are commercial matters for the British Rail property board and it would not be appropriate for Ministers to intervene.

Mr. Marlow

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport if he will discuss with the chairman of British Rail the action he is taking to secure the route of the Great Central line as far as Rugby as a potential route for trains from the Channel tunnel.

Mr. Portillo

Securing land which may be required for potential rail routes to the Channel tunnel is a matter for the proposers of the route.
