In 1988, net direct investment overseas by United Kingdom residents was £15.1 billion, compared with overseas net direct investment in the United Kingdom of £7.8 billion, giving a net outflow of £7.3 billion. The corresponding figures for 1978 were £3.5 billion and £2.0 billion respectively, giving a net outflow of £1.5 billion.
