To ask the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster if he will make a statement on the level of personal consumer credit.

At the end of March 1989 the amount of consumer credit outstanding on the broad definition, which includes bank lending, was £43.4 billion. The vast majority of household borrowing is accounted for by mortgages.
