§ Mr. FlynnTo ask the Secretary of State for Defence what volumes of toxic wastes are present at the Ministry of Defence, atomic weapons establishment or Royal Ordnance factories at Aldermaston, Burghfield, Caerwent and HMS Vulcan; what storage and disposal facilities exist for these wastes; and what health and safety provisions cover the wastes.
§ Mr. SainsburyIt is not the practice to give details of the quantities of radioactive and other toxic waste substances held at MOD premises. Any such wastes are held temporarily in appropriate containers and storage buildings until they can be disposed of safely in accordance with legislative commitments. While being stored, the wastes are subject to the provisions of the Health and Safety at Work, etc. Act 1974. Disposal is subject to agreement with relevant environmental regulatory departments (Her Majesty's inspectors of pollution; the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food; and, where relevant, the Welsh Office and Her Majesty's industrial pollution inspectorate in Scotland). Transport of wastes is subject to regulatory measures of the Health and Safety Executive and the Department of Transport.
