To ask the Minister for the Civil Service if he will make a statement on the appointment of the principal of the Civil Service college.

[holding answer 16 June 1989]: The Civil Service college was launched as an executive agency on 6 June 1989. The current principal of the college, Mr. Roger Jackling, was appointed as its first chief executive.

Mr. Jackling, a career civil servant, has been principal for two and half years. He has maintained and improved the high teaching standards of the college and evolved the management systems which have resulted in a smooth transition to agency status. He will return to his parent department in the autumn and his successor will he recruited through an open competition run by the Civil Service Commission.
