HL Deb 14 June 1989 vol 508 cc1508-10WA
Lord Shepherd

asked Her Majesty's Government:

How they will ensure that education and training strategies and priorities for the National Health Service will be related to manpower planning requirements; how regional and local requirements will relate to national professional education and training strategies; whether there will continue to be a commitment to education for professions allied to medicine; and whether the paramedical professions of trust hospitals will be involved in the training process; and, if so, how costs will be apportioned.

Lord Henley

The White Paper continues the Government's commitment to maintaining the quality of manpower and training. Work is in hand on the detailed arrangements for the future organisation and funding of education and training and a further working paper will be issued in July.

Special arrangements will be made to ensure that the training of key professional and technical staff will continue at an adequate level and that the costs incurred by self-governing trusts will be covered, and that hospitals, including self-governing trusts, which support training will not be put at a disadvantage by comparison with others.
