To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what is(a) the number of and (b) the proportion of inmates of young offender institutions who have to slop out.

On 31 March 1989, the latest date for which figures are available, there were something over 3,100 young offenders having to slop out. The proportion of inmates in young offender institutions having to slop out on that date was approximately 46 per cent.
