asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they will give, for each of the last five years, the numbers of prison officers who have been killed or injured at work or in connection with their work.

The number of prison officers recorded as having been assaulted on duty are as follows:

1985— 146
1986— 136
1987— 103
1988— 80
1989—(to 30th April 1989) 38

No officer has died following an assault during the last five years.

Information relating to injuries sustained in accidents on duty is not readily available.
