HC Deb 06 June 1989 vol 154 c66W
Mr. Austin Mitchell

To ask the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, further to his reply of 27 April,Official Report, columns 614–5, concerning gross output of finished manufactures and imports of semi-manufactures, intermediate products and basic materials, whether he will provide comparable figures for clothing; and if he will add figures for 1973 and for exports.

Mr. Alan Clark

The available figures for gross output of finished manufactures for clothing follow. A split of trade into semi-manufactures, intermediate finished manufactures and basic materials is not appropriate as clothing is a finished manufacture for consumer use.

Gross output of finished manufactures: clothing1 1985 prices
£million
1970 5,023
1973 5,627
1979 5,844
1988 5,654
1 Finished clothing is defined as clothing, hats and gloves, hosiery and other weft knitted goods (SIC[80] group 453 and activity 4,363).
