HC Deb 06 June 1989 vol 154 cc39-40W
Mr. Ron Davies

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland what measures are in force to control grey squirrels in Northern Ireland; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Needham

Under article 15(1) of The Wildlife (Northern Ireland) Order 1985 it is an offence to release grey squirrels into the wild. Grey squirrels may be killed or taken, other than by prohibited methods, by owners or occupiers, or persons authorised by them on their own land. The present population of these animals does not constitute a threat.
