HC Deb 06 June 1989 vol 154 cc123-4W
Mr. Menzies Campbell

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence if he has commissioned any studies on the minimum strength of forces necessary to defend Western Europe in the event that the CSCE talks in Vienna achieve parity between the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation and Warsaw pact forces.

Mr. Neubert

The NATO proposals tabled in Vienna were undepinned by studies which showed that they provided sufficient forces to maintain the forward defence of western Europe. The studies indicated that further significant reductions in tanks, artillery, etc., could have serious implications for NATO's ability to maintain forward defence, as it is currently understood.
