Mr. Sillars

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what was the number of notified redundancies in manufacturing in Scotland in each of the past 23 years.

There are no comprehensive statistics on redundancies. A consistent series on redundancies involving 10 or more workers confirmed to the Employment Department: The Training Agency is available only back to 1977. The number of such redundancies in Scottish manufacturing industry in each year from 1977 to 1988 is set out in the table.
