To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science how many physical education teachers there were in 1987, 1988 and on the latest available date.

The latest available data of the number of teachers in maintained schools in England with a post A-level qualification in physical education are as follows:

Full-time Part-time
Primary schools (including nursery) 12,800 2,100
Secondary schools 31,600 3,900

The figures refer to March 1987, for primary schools and March 1988 for secondary schools. Information for secondary schools in 1987 is not available.

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will give the numbers entering training to become physical education teachers in 1986, 1987 and 1988.
