To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what information he has as to how many claims were made against local authorities in each of the years, 1988, 1987, 1986 and 1985 after accidents to pedestrians as a result of defects in roads and pavements; what proportion were accepted by the local authorities and their insurers; how much was paid out in compensation; and what advice his Department gives local authorities about dealing with such claims.
