HC Deb 28 July 1989 vol 157 cc966-7W
Mr. Sillars

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland (1) at what board meeting or meeting of a committee with powers the Greater Glasgow health board decided to advertise works contracts for medical records facilities and laboratory services in the official journal of the European Communities of 30 June;

(2) which committee of the Greater Glasgow health board is responsible to the board for (a) medical records and (b) laboratory services; what reports they have received on the privatisation of these services; and when they last discussed the matter in depth.

Mr. Michael Forsyth

The finance and general purposes committee of Greater Glasgow health board discussed the potential for competitive tendering in a numberof services and agreed at the April 1989 meeting to the acceleration and expansion of the competitive tendering programme including clinical support services. The committee has received no specific report on privatisation. As regards the journal of 30 June, the advertisements merely invite expressions of interest in tendering.

Mr. Sillars

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what is the estimated current year expenditure by the Greater Glasgow health board on(a) medical records facilities and (b) laboratory services; how many persons are employed in each; and what is the board's calculation of redundancy payments should the services be privatised.

Mr. Michael Forsyth

I have asked the Greater Glasgow health board to forward the hon. Member a copy of its annual accounts. The board is at the stage of gathering and considering expressions of interest from contractors.

Mr. Sillars

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland when the Greater Glasgow health board's advertisements in the official journal of the European Communities of 30 June, references 89/S 123 14555/EN and 89/S 123 14556/EN, were first drafted; when the final draft was approved; and when it was submitted to the journal for publication.

Mr. Michael Forsyth

The advertisements were drafted after the April meeting of the finance and general purposes committee and were submitted for publication on 20 June 1989.
