HC Deb 28 July 1989 vol 157 cc970-1W
Mr. McNamara

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what was the average length of custodial sentence of female prisoners in Scotland in 1988 and in the first six months of 1989.

Lord James Douglas-Hamilton

Statistics on court disposals during 1988 and the first six months of 1989 are not yet available. Provisional estimates based on prison reception statistics indicate that in 1988 the average length of sentence of females received into the penal system on direct sentence was 121 days. Prison reception statistics are not yet available for the period April-June 1989. Provisional estimates indicate that in the first three months of 1989 the average length of sentence of females received into the penal system on direct sentence was 107 days. Females sentenced to life imprisonment or indeterminate detention are not included in the above calculations.
