HC Deb 28 July 1989 vol 157 cc1104-5W
Mr. John Carlisle

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science whether he will propose amendments to the existing system of the collection of examination fees from pupils to ensure that such fees are paid to the local education authority before those pupils enter the examination.

Mrs. Rumbold

It is for the independent examination boards to recover fees for examination entries. Under the existing arrangements, local education authorities meet the cost of pupil entries from maintained schools and, in the case of prescribed public examinations, may not levy a charge in respect of that cost where the pupil has been prepared for the examination in a maintained school.
