HC Deb 27 July 1989 vol 157 cc876-7W
Mr. Cash

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Security what information he has and from what sources, on the proportion of widows, under 45 years who remarry.

Mrs. Gillian Shephard

[pursuant to the reply, 22 May 1989, column 435]: I regret that the reply given has been found to contain an error. The amended reply is as follows: Latest available information indicates that the proportion of widows under 45 remarrying in 1987 was approximately 10 per cent.

Table 3 of the article by John Haskey, of OPCS, entitled "Widowhood, widowerhood and remarriage", published in "Population Trends" No. 30 (January 1983), shows that of those widows aged 40–44 who had remarried in 1980–81, 90 per cent. had done so within 10 years of their being widowed.
