asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether, in view of the way Japanese and Italian manufacturers are funding the chairs of Japanese and Italian at Oxford University, they will encourage British manufacturers to fund chairs of English at Japanese and Italian universities.

We have made clear our view that there is mutual value in closer links between business and higher education. The form that involvement takes, though, must be for companies themselves to determine.
