HC Deb 24 July 1989 vol 157 c572W
46. Mr. Jacques Arnold

To ask the Secretary of State for Energy what improvements in thermal efficiency have been achieved in the past 10 years.

Mr. Peter Morrison

The efficiency of the nation's energy use has improved greatly over the past 10 years. In 1978 the United Kingdom consumed 1.23 tonnes of coal equivalent per £1,000 of GDP (at 1985 factor cost). In 1988 this had fallen to 1 tonne of coal equivalent per £1,000 of GDP in the same price terms, a reduction of 18.7 per cent. over the period.
