§ Mr. KirkwoodTo ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will list in theOfficial Report the information he has as to the amounts spent by (a) private companies and (b) charities on medical research in each of the last 10 years, or the latest periods for which figures are available; and what is his estimate of the United Kingdom proportion of spending on medical research this represents.
Mr. Jackson[holding answer 19 July 1989]: Information is not collected centrally on the spending of private companies or charities on medical research. The majority of larger medical charities are members of the Association of Medical Research Charities, and I understand from the association that spending on medical research by their member organisations in recent years has been as follows:
£ million 1982–83 72.6 1983–84 76.8 1984–85 86.6 1985–86 108.8 1986–87 110.2 1987–88 137.6 1988–89 148.2
