HL Deb 24 July 1989 vol 510 c1289WA
The Marquess of Ailesbury

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether it is common practice in the Office of the Public Trustee to require widows to state whether they paid for their husband's funeral; and if so, how much they spent.

The Lord Chancellor (Lord Mackay of Clashfern)

The duty of the Public Trustee as executor is to the estate or trust. In those cases where he is appointed after the funeral has taken place he is obliged to find out how much has been paid in respect of the funeral expense.
